Seeking Refuge in Christ

You’ve hit your drive deep into the woods. The fairway feels miles away, but the only way forward is to seek refuge back in the fairway.

Life often feels the same. We find ourselves off course, deep in trouble, and surrounded by obstacles. In those moments, we need more than quick fixes—we need a place of refuge. Hebrews 6:18–19 reminds us: “…we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

The image here is powerful. Refuge is not just about escape; it is about safety, steadiness, and rest. Just as a golfer finds relief by returning to the fairway, we find our true safety in Christ. When we flee to Him, we are not running away in fear—we are running toward the anchor of our souls.

Think about an anchor. An anchor holds a ship steady even when winds rip and waves crash. Life’s storms will come—illness, loss, disappointment, temptation—but Christ’s refuge is not shaken. The hope of eternal life, found in His death and resurrection, secures us no matter what may come.

The passage also calls us to “take hold of the hope.” This isn’t passive. Refuge in Christ is an active choice. We must be seeking Him in prayer, clinging to His promises, and resting on His Word. It is through this trust He has earned from us that our souls find calm in the chaos.

Returning to the golf course, imagine the relief of stepping back onto the fairway behind your ball. The hole may still stretch before you, but you’re back in position to move forward. In Christ, our refuge not only delivers us from the danger but also sets us back on course. He doesn’t just pull us from the woods—He points us toward the finish line, toward eternal glory.

So when the world closes in, when sin entangles, or when the weight of life feels crushing, remember where to flee. Christ alone is our strength, our safe place, and our anchor. Run to Him, hold fast, and let your soul rest secure.
